Iron deficiency anaemia
Iron deficiency is common and is the leading cause of iron deficiency anaemia. Anaemia means low haemoglobin, which means red blood cells cannot deliver enough oxygen to the rest of the body - producing fatigue, weakness, pallor, headaches, chest pain, brittle nails and hair shedding.
The good news is that iron deficiency is straightforward to identify clinically and on blood tests, and equally straightforward to treat. Options range from oral iron replacement to intravenous iron infusions - our doctors match the regimen to how severe the deficiency is and how quickly you want to correct it.
Many clinics will simply top up the iron. At our Orchard clinic we work in the other order - the deficiency is usually a symptom, and the underlying cause matters. It might be gastrointestinal blood loss, an absorption issue, a diet gap, or a coexisting deficiency in vitamin C, folate or vitamin B12. Addressing the driver is what stops the deficiency coming back six months later.
