The masseter is the chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw. In some men it is genuinely bulky, sometimes with a history of clenching or grinding, and reducing its activity narrows the lower face over weeks.
A wide lower face can also be bone or soft tissue. Neither responds to botulinum toxin. Your doctor examines the area, asks you to clench, and tells you honestly which you are dealing with.
Assessment first: your doctor palpates the masseter while you clench, to confirm the width at the angle of the jaw is muscular rather than bone or soft tissue.
Injection points are marked over the body of the masseter, away from the muscles of expression at the front of the cheek.
Small injections are placed into the muscle. Session length, and whether a second session follows, are set by your doctor at consultation.
The change is a gradual narrowing at the angle of the jaw as masseter bulk reduces, not a sudden difference in shape. Results vary between individuals and cannot be guaranteed.
