Q-Switch Laser Treatment for Men

Q-Switch laser delivers very short pulses of energy used mainly for pigment. It is assessed and delivered by an SMC-registered doctor.

Abstract still life: a single pulse of light striking dark pigment and scattering the grains, standing in for Q-switched laser pigment treatment.

Quick answer

Q-Switch laser is used mainly for pigment. Pigment is assessed before it is treated, because some pigmentation worsens with the wrong light, and skin type changes what is safe.

What it is

A Q-Switch laser delivers energy in very short pulses, which is what makes it useful for pigment. It is not a resurfacing laser and it does not remove a layer of skin.

Pigment is not one condition. Sun damage, post-inflammatory marks and melasma behave differently, and melasma in particular can be made worse by aggressive light treatment. Assessment comes first, and in some cases the answer is a topical plan and sun protection rather than a laser.

Wavelength, mode and indication

Longer wavelength, deeper pigment
The longer wavelength used in this class of laser, 1064 nm, passes further into the skin and is absorbed less by surface melanin. That combination is what makes it the safer choice in darker skin types and the usual choice for deeper or mixed pigment.
Shorter wavelength, surface pigment
The shorter wavelength, 532 nm, is produced by frequency-doubling the 1064 nm beam and is absorbed strongly by melanin near the surface, so it is used for well-defined superficial marks such as sun-related pigmentation and freckling. It carries more risk of pigment change and is chosen by skin type, not by request.
High-energy spot mode
Short, high-energy pulses over a defined spot are used to break up discrete lesions. The treated pigment often darkens before it clears, which is expected and is explained before treatment.
Low-fluence toning mode
Repeated low-energy passes across a wider area are used where the aim is overall tone rather than a single mark, and where a stronger setting would risk making the pigment worse, as it can in melasma.
How the setting is chosen
Which wavelength and which mode are used on your skin is a clinical decision taken at assessment, based on your skin type and on the kind of pigment being treated, rather than a choice from a menu. Session length depends on the area treated and is confirmed by your doctor.

What it treats

  • Sun-related pigmentation in suitable skin types
  • Post-inflammatory pigmentation, once the cause is controlled
  • Dull, uneven skin tone in selected cases
  • Melasma only where a doctor judges it appropriate, and cautiously

The procedure, step by step

Assessment first, including skin type, the type of pigment and whether light treatment is safe for it.

The skin is cleaned and eye protection is fitted for you and the operator.

The laser is passed over the treatment area. Most men describe a light flicking sensation.

The skin is cooled, sun protection is applied and aftercare is explained.

Results timeline

Some pigment can look darker before it clears. That is expected in certain indications and is explained before treatment.

Pigment treatment is usually a course, and improvement is gradual. Results vary between individuals and cannot be guaranteed, and pigment can recur with sun exposure.

Downtime and aftercare

Mild redness and warmth for some hours, and in some indications temporary darkening of the treated pigment.

Daily sun protection is not optional after pigment treatment. Avoid sauna and heavy exercise for twenty-four hours, and report any blistering or unexpected pain to the clinic.

Course and maintenance

Pigment treatment is planned as a course with intervals set by your skin's response, then maintenance driven mainly by sun protection.

The number of sessions and the interval between them are set by your doctor and adjusted by how your skin responds to the first treatments.

Product and provenance

Q-switched lasers are regulated as medical devices in Singapore. Treatment is described here by wavelength and mode, since 1064 nm and 532 nm reach different pigment, rather than by a machine trade name.

The wavelength, the fluence and the number of passes used in your session are recorded in your notes at the time of treatment.

Why patients choose Hisential for this

  • Every laser session is performed by an SMC-registered doctor, not delegated to a therapist.
  • Pigment is assessed before any laser is fired, because not all pigment responds to the same wavelength and some worsens with the wrong one.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers, written by our clinical team. Tap any question for its direct permalink, or reach out to your Personal Concierge for anything else.

  1. Will one session clear my pigmentation?

Usually not. Pigment treatment is planned as a course, and some pigment recurs with sun exposure.

  2. Is it safe for my skin type?

That is exactly what assessment decides. Darker skin types carry a higher risk of pigment change and settings are adjusted accordingly.

  3. Can it treat melasma?

Sometimes, and cautiously. Melasma can worsen with aggressive light treatment, so it is not treated on request without assessment.

  4. What is the downtime?

Usually redness for a few hours. Some indications show temporary darkening before clearing.

  5. Who performs the treatment?

The session is performed by an SMC-registered doctor.
