- Longer wavelength, deeper pigment
- The longer wavelength used in this class of laser, 1064 nm, passes further into the skin and is absorbed less by surface melanin. That combination is what makes it the safer choice in darker skin types and the usual choice for deeper or mixed pigment.
- Shorter wavelength, surface pigment
- The shorter wavelength, 532 nm, is produced by frequency-doubling the 1064 nm beam and is absorbed strongly by melanin near the surface, so it is used for well-defined superficial marks such as sun-related pigmentation and freckling. It carries more risk of pigment change and is chosen by skin type, not by request.
- High-energy spot mode
- Short, high-energy pulses over a defined spot are used to break up discrete lesions. The treated pigment often darkens before it clears, which is expected and is explained before treatment.
- Low-fluence toning mode
- Repeated low-energy passes across a wider area are used where the aim is overall tone rather than a single mark, and where a stronger setting would risk making the pigment worse, as it can in melasma.
