STI prevalence in Singapore

Gonorrhoea, syphilis and chlamydia are the three STIs that are legally notifiable in Singapore, so they are the ones with published national figures. Together they were reported at 207.1 cases per 100,000 population in 2024. Early detection and treatment prevent complications and reduce onward transmission.

Reported incidence per 100,000 population, Singapore, 2024
InfectionIncidence rate per 100,000 population
Chlamydia
91.1
Syphilis
70.0
Gonorrhoea
46.0

This list is not exhaustive. Genital herpes, genital warts, Mycoplasma genitalium and other infections are not notifiable in Singapore, so no national rates are published for them, and testing can detect many infections that do not appear above. Testing approaches in depth

The comprehensive panel is the most thorough single-visit approach - covering the major STIs in one coordinated workup.

What's included: 4th-generation HIV test; syphilis serology (RPR and treponemal-specific); chlamydia and gonorrhoea PCR (urine + targeted swabs where appropriate); hepatitis B surface antigen + antibody; hepatitis C antibody. Optional: HSV antibody testing, HPV testing where symptoms suggest.

Sample collection: Most testing is done from a single blood draw plus a urine sample. Throat or rectal swabs are added if exposure history warrants. The full process takes 15-20 minutes.

Results timeline: Most results return within 2-5 working days. Rapid HIV screening (immediate result) can be added on request.

Follow-up: Your personal health concierge shares results discreetly - by phone, WhatsApp, or in-person depending on your preference. If any result requires action, a follow-up consultation is scheduled the same day.

Best suited for: Routine screening, baseline before a new relationship, peace of mind after a specific concern, or annual health maintenance.

How Hisential approaches STD testing

At Hisential, we treat STD testing as a routine, confidential part of health maintenance - not an exceptional event requiring justification. Every patient receives a structured panel calibrated to their exposure history and clinical context: 4th-generation HIV testing (window period 18-45 days), syphilis serology, chlamydia and gonorrhoea PCR on urine and targeted swabs, hepatitis B and C serology, and HSV or HPV testing where indicated. Window periods determine timing - we don't run tests that won't yet be reliable, and we schedule repeat testing where window periods require it. For HIV PEP, HIV PEP is started immediately alongside baseline testing. Results are shared discreetly by your personal health concierge through your preferred channel, with same-day follow-up consultations if any result requires action.

Quick answers

Q:

How long after exposure should I wait to test?

Different tests have different window periods. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: 1-2 weeks. HIV: 4 weeks (4th-gen test); 12 weeks for complete certainty. Syphilis: 3-6 weeks.

Q:

Are results confidential?

Yes - entirely. Records are encrypted, results are shared only with you, and nothing is reported to employers, family, or insurers without your explicit consent, except where required by regulations or law.

Q:

Do I need a referral?

No - Hisential STD testing is a direct private consultation. Book or WhatsApp the clinic directly.

Q:

What if a test is positive?

Treatment is initiated immediately for bacterial STIs (curable with antibiotics). For viral infections, comprehensive management is coordinated through your personal health concierge.

Q:

Can I be tested without a physical examination?

Often, yes - blood and urine testing covers most STIs without examination. Examination is added when symptoms suggest the need.

Q:

How fast can I get tested?

Appointments are often available same day or next day, subject to clinic capacity; your concierge confirms the slot. Rapid HIV testing provides initial results within minutes during the consultation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers, written by our clinical team. Tap any question for its direct permalink, or reach out to your Personal Concierge for anything else.

  1. How often should I get tested?

For most people in stable mutually-monogamous relationships, annual testing is appropriate. For those with multiple partners, new partners, or higher-frequency activity, every 3-6 months is recommended. After any specific exposure concern, targeted testing on the appropriate timeline.

  2. What's the difference between STD and STI?

The terms are largely interchangeable. 'STI' (sexually transmitted infection) is increasingly preferred because someone can have an infection without symptoms (a 'disease' implies symptoms). Both refer to the same set of conditions.

  3. Are STD tests painful?

No - testing is generally not painful. Blood draws involve a brief needle stick. Urine and swab samples are not painful. Examination, when needed, may be briefly uncomfortable but never painful.

  4. When can a test detect HIV after exposure?

4th-generation HIV testing can detect HIV approximately 18-45 days after exposure. Negative results within this window should be confirmed at 4 weeks and again at 12 weeks for complete certainty. See [HIV testing](/hiv-testing) for more detail.

  5. What if I had a high-risk exposure recently?

If within 72 hours, [HIV PEP](/hiv-pep) should be considered immediately - same-day consultation. Beyond 72 hours, baseline testing now and follow-up testing at 4 weeks and 12 weeks provides clarity.

  6. Can I get tested anonymously?

Hisential testing is confidential rather than anonymous - identification is required for laboratory work. However, results are accessible only to you and your treating clinician, and nothing is shared externally without your explicit consent, except where required by regulations or law.

  7. Will my family or partner be informed?

Only with your explicit consent. If you'd like partner notification supported confidentially, we can provide that - including anonymous notification letters where appropriate.

  8. Can I use MediSave or insurance at Hisential?

Fees are private and payable in full at the visit. MediSave, CHAS and Healthier SG subsidies do not apply. Some insurance plans cover consultations and investigations on a reimbursement basis: you pay the clinic and claim back from your insurer afterwards. The concierge provides the documentation you need and helps with the claim paperwork. Instalment payment is available: ask the concierge about the options before your visit.

  9. What if I have multiple partners?

Regular testing (every 3-6 months) is recommended. Consideration of [HIV PrEP](/hiv-prep) for ongoing HIV prevention is also worth discussing. Hisential approaches this without judgement - risk reduction is the clinical goal.

  10. Should my partner also get tested?

Generally yes, particularly if any result is positive or if you're starting a new relationship. Couples testing - testing together - is offered for partners who prefer that approach.

  11. Is treatment included in testing?

Testing and treatment are separate consultations. If any test result requires treatment, [STD treatment](/std-treatment) is initiated through a follow-up consultation, typically within the same day.

  12. How long does the consultation take?

The initial testing consultation lasts 30-45 minutes including history, examination if relevant, and sample collection. Results follow-up consultations are 15-25 minutes.
