Gonorrhoea, syphilis and chlamydia are the three STIs that are legally notifiable in Singapore, so they are the ones with published national figures. Together they were reported at 207.1 cases per 100,000 population in 2024. Early detection and treatment prevent complications and reduce onward transmission.

STD (sexually transmitted disease) testing - also called STI (sexually transmitted infection) testing - is the diagnostic process that detects bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections transmitted through sexual contact. Testing converts anxiety and uncertainty into actionable clinical information.
The most commonly tested infections are HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, herpes simplex virus, HPV, and trichomoniasis. Each has different testing methods, different "window periods" (the time after exposure when testing becomes reliable), and different treatment implications.1
Most STIs are highly treatable, particularly when detected early. Bacterial STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis) are typically cured with antibiotics. Viral STIs (HIV, herpes, HPV, hepatitis B and C) have different management - some are curable, others are controlled long-term. Either way, knowing your status is the foundation of every effective decision that follows.

A comprehensive STD panel at Hisential typically includes:
4th-generation HIV test - detects both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen, providing earlier detection (window period approximately 18-45 days). Reliable for HIV-1 and HIV-2. For more details on testing specifically, see HIV testing.
Syphilis serology - detects antibodies to Treponema pallidum. Window period approximately 3-6 weeks after exposure. Confirms active or past infection; further testing distinguishes between them.
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea PCR - molecular testing on urine sample (and where appropriate, throat or rectal swab). Window period approximately 1-2 weeks. Highly sensitive.
Hepatitis B and C serology - detects antibodies and (for hepatitis B) surface antigen. Important particularly for higher-risk exposure history or upcoming vaccinations.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) - antibody testing where indicated. Routine asymptomatic HSV screening is debated; we discuss whether this fits your situation.
HPV testing - where indicated based on visible warts, symptoms, or for asymptomatic detection in men who receive anal intercourse (Anal Pap). See genital wart removal for treatment.
Trichomoniasis - testing where indicated based on symptoms.
When to test depends on exposure timing:
- Immediately after exposure - baseline testing is useful for establishing pre-exposure status, but most tests won't yet detect recent infection
- Within 72 hours of high-risk HIV exposure - HIV PEP should be considered immediately, alongside baseline testing
- 2 weeks after exposure - chlamydia and gonorrhoea PCR are reliable
- 3-6 weeks after exposure - syphilis serology becomes reliable
- 4 weeks after exposure - 4th-generation HIV testing is highly reliable; final confirmatory testing at 12 weeks
- 3 months after exposure - all tests above are at their most reliable, providing complete clarity
For routine screening without specific exposure concern, annual testing is recommended for most people; more frequent (every 3-6 months) for those with multiple partners or higher-frequency activity.2
